Becoming a Registered Massage Therapist (RMT ) in Ontario:
To practice Massage Therapy in Ontario, you must first obtain a Certificate of Registration from the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario ( CMTO). Only those registered with the College may use the protected titles “Registered Massage Therapist” (RMT) or “Massage Therapist” (MT). Note — Both titles are equivalent and mean that the holder of the title is a Registrant of the College.
Ontario’s Registered Massage Therapists are charged with upholding the competency standards of the profession as set out by the College. Competency standards refer to the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for competent practice of Massage Therapy in Ontario. The College has created a Competency Standards document which provides a clear understanding of the competencies required of a Massage Therapist in three key areas — health science, professional development and clinical science. Those wishing to practise Massage Therapy in Ontario should read the Competency Standards document and use it as a tool to identify areas requiring further development and training, and to create a personal development plan to ensure they meet today’s evolving professional standards.
How to a Get a Certificate of Registration from the CMTO
Requirements:
- Pass the Certification Examinations
- Professional Liability Insurance ( minimum of $2,000,000 per incidence)
- Criminal Record Screen
- Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Residency
- CPR and First Aid
- Payment of Fee
Ontario RMT Certification Examinations:
Before one can become registered to practise Massage Therapy in Ontario, they must successfully complete the certification examinations administered by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario. The Certification Examination evaluates whether a candidate for registration with the College has the entry to practice competence expected for safe Massage Therapy practice.
There are two components of the certification examination — the written Multiple Choice Questionnaire (MCQ) and the Objectively Structured Clinical Evaluation (OSCE). A minimum scaled score of 70 is required on each component of the examination.
If you were educated outside of Ontario, you will likely need to pass the CPLA examination ( has 3 components).
